This book is beachy, fluffy and fun. It's also kick-ass, violent, hilarious and dramatic, and it tackles every trope out there and turns them on their heads. Libba Bray's writing is frank, funny and personable; you meet around ten wonderfully diverse, unique girls and yes, you're dunked into each of their perspectives. But trust me—Bray pulls it off. Other things she pulls off? Footnotes, commercial breaks, and messages from the Corporation, all witty, pointed jabs at society's portrayal of women. Contrast that with the genuine friendships which our main characters develop, and you have a rollicking satire that is warm and fuzzy and insightful all at once.
With a beach setting that acts as an ideal backdrop to the powerful messages framed by this laugh-out-loud story, Beauty Queens is the perfect summer read: all at once fluffy and deep and all the feel-good you'll need this summer.
